Do You Work With Children?
Naturalist Mentors + Outdoor Educators
Nature is THE path for child development. Foundations IN Nature will facilitate understanding for key concepts in child development through a nature connection lens. Understanding these key concepts will give you tools, language and strategies to continue the plight of nature connection legitimacy as a key ingredient in human development.
Occupational Therapists are the nature connection specialists of the future. Occupational Therapists are uniquely poised to be key players in the movement to bring children back to nature. Occupational Therapist's are trained to think and make therapeutic decisions from the theory that occupation must be meaningful and functional. Development, habilitation and rehabilitation, are the most meaningful and functional outside. OT's trained in development and sensory processing understand the developmental needs, the systems responsible for these needs and how to help the neurological connections "fire" for optimal development. This program helps reconnect your knowledge and skills with the efficiency of our natural blueprint in nature.
Teachers are tireless in their dedication to children. Teacher's are perhaps the most undervalued profession in the U.S today. Bringing the practices of FINN to the classroom and educational day will make teacher's lives easier by facilitating greater attention, and in doing this, a natural vacuum for participation and learning.
The end result of nature connection awareness and movement practices in the educational setting is: emotionally and neurologically integrated students. Integration creates happier students, teachers and administration which leads to greater performance in academic goals.
8 Guiding Principles of Foundations IN Nature
#1 - Exposure to the Elements of Nature, which are multi sensory and four dimensional, are the direct pathway or “blueprint” for optimal neurological development.
#2 - The Human Body and Mind are hard wired for meaningful, functional occupation in the elements of the natural world.
#3 - When we develop in the natural world, as we have for millennia, we are happier, healthier, more intelligent, compassionate and more deeply connected with all life.
#4- Being oriented to or connected with the natural world IS “Human Nature”. This ultimately leads to connection with self, community and environment, which leads to success in all of life.
#5 - Understanding the innate developmental needs of babies and children, leads adults to boundaries that are appropriate for optimal development.
#6 - Given appropriate developmental boundaries, children will seek what they need.
#7 - We are above all else: Wired to survive.
#8 - In order to capture the vital energy necessary for engagement, children must be "met where they are". This means that they will learn best from an interest driven interaction dictated by their current development. In our current world paradigm, children are exposed to a signifanct more amount of technology than they are to nature. For this reason, parents, teachers, therapists and educators must learn to use technology in a brilliant and conscious way to lead children back to the natural world.
